Gary Morgenstein has written a great little book with How to Find a Woman…Or Not (Volume 1). I especially love his advice that men should view the world “as one big singles bar” meaning that everywhere you go, you should keep your eyes open for potential women to talk to. There are opportunities all over the place. I couldn’t agree more.

The book is written in the first person as Morgenstein shares his own experience. This gives the reader the impression that you’re sitting with the author and having a casual chat. Morgenstein equates the experience of going out on a date like the craziness of “March Madness, one mistake and you’re eliminated.” To combat this, he provides what he calls “Morgy Rules” which are little tidbits of thought sprinkled throughout the book to help the reader. For example:

“You are still young at heart because without that belief in the possible, none of this can work.”

or

“There is no rejection.”

I agreed with the start of Chapter Two, that “Everyone has potential for you to meet your true love. Or at least a date.” Very true. I often think daters forget about this and immediately think they have to jump into a relationship. Remember, dating is supposed to be fun!

The language of the book is clearly “guy speak.” The author provides talking points for ways to approach and meet women almost anywhere. Like most dating books, this book offers a lot of common sense tips – but still, sometimes that’s exactly what you need to hear when you’re dating. How to Find a Woman… or Not seems to be directed toward guys returning to the dating world. The author suggests that guys 25-55 would enjoy this book, but as I read through it I could picture guys on the older side (40 and up) who have been in a relationship of some sort and are trying to figure out the dating world benefiting most from the author’s advice.

The author provides a host of tips for meeting women in various places (like the subway, airport, out on the street, coffee shop) and I was pleasantly surprised by the book and feel it would be a helpful tool in providing confidence to men struggling with dating or unsure on how to go about it.

The book Eat Pray, Love by Elizabeth Gilbert doesn’t give dating advice or tell singles how to live. What it does instead is provide a look at one woman’s relationship meltdown and what she does to figure it all out.

Synopsis:
As the story opens, Elizabeth Gilbert is in her early 30s and having a meltdown on the floor of her bathroom. She has been trying to get pregnant, and realizes suddenly not only does she not want to get pregnant, she doesn’t want to be married anymore, either: at least, not to her current husband.
If the story sounds dramatic, it is. But singles in the same age group as Gilbert will be able to relate to this story, and even find a little inspiration in it. As a way to deal with all Gilbert is struggling with, she travels around the world to get back to basics and figure out why she is the way she is.

As one can tell from the title, the author plans her self-exploration (and recovery) in three parts. She begins in Italy for food and cute men and all-around pleasure. She then heads to India to get into her spiritual side, and finally travels to Indonesia to find a sense of equilibrium. Since Gilbert is writing as she “discovers” pieces of herself, the book is a bit dramatic and artificial. But she is a skilled writer, and where this story could have become tiresome (all that depression, all that whining!) it isn’t. We manage to feel for her, and more than that, pull for her.

Why 30-Something Singles Will Enjoy It:
Unless you met your special someone at an early age, you’ll bound to wonder about your life when you reach your thirties and are still not the person you meant yourself to be. Who among the single set hasn’t wanted to just fly somewhere exotic, sit under a tree with a cute local villager and forget who you are? Just for a day or so. There is a lesson to be learned for singles in this book, and that is, when something isn’t working in your life – go figure it out. It’s as simple as that. Gilbert shows us how she did it, and in turn gives us all an idea on how we can accomplish this task as well.
